Mellor Unveils Next-Gen Strata Minibus

Say hello to the all-new Strata – Mellor’s latest showstopper in the small bus world. It’s smarter, more accessible and packed with fresh features to make every journey smoother, greener and comfier. And yes, it’s still built right here in the UK.

Since its debut in 2016, the original Strata has earned its stripes as a reliable workhorse – now it’s back with a vengeance, ready to shake up the sector all over again. If you thought small buses were all the same, think again.

Accessibility, meet ambition

First up: big wins for accessibility. The reworked rear saloon now has just one step up from the low-floor section (down from two), reducing trip hazards and making things safer for everyone onboard. Passengers also get an extra 100mm of headroom – that’s a whole lot less crouching and a lot more comfort.

The low-floor area’s been stretched by 266mm, making space for four extra seats. In fact, there’s now room for up to twelve seats in the low-floor area alone – plus space for up to two wheelchairs. So whether you’re using a mobility aid or just fancy more legroom, the new Strata’s sure to impress.

Layouts that work smarter, not harder

The emergency exit has been repositioned too, allowing for an extra rear seat in the Plus and Ultra versions. No compromise on comfort – just more room for more passengers. Win-win.

And if you’re a driver or operator, it gets even better: it’s still built on the trusty Mercedes Sprinter platform and comes fully loaded with the latest GSR2 driver assistance tech. That’s Attention Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Active Brake Assist, as standard. Basically, it’s as sharp behind the wheel as it is on the street.

Inside, it’s all about thoughtful details – from dual tip-up seats for four priority spaces to audio-visual displays (including one facing the wheelchair bay), PSVAR compliance and even hearing loops. Plus free Wi-Fi, USB charging and plush part-leather, part-moquette seating that’s unique to Mellor. Luxury without the fuss.

"Sustainable, British-built and community-focused"

John Randerson, CEO of Woodall Nicholson Group, said:

“We are dedicated to enhancing our operations in the UK. The new Strata bus is designed with sustainable manufacturing in mind, protecting UK jobs and adhering to ethical procurement practices. This initiative will strengthen community connections by providing affordable and accessible transportation.”

Built for the back roads (and the city too)

Thanks to its 2.3-metre width and lightweight frame, the Strata handles like a dream – even on tight rural routes where bigger buses struggle. But don’t let its size fool you. This is a premium ride all the way, with a cost of ownership that knocks spots off bulkier single-deckers.

It’s got a seriously tight 17-metre turning circle and, thanks to its efficient construction, up to 22 miles per gallon. So it’s not just nimble, it’s frugal too.

As a certified Low-Emission Bus (LEB), it’s eligible for BSOG and other government support – giving operators a greener, more cost-effective alternative that doesn’t skimp on quality.

“Still going strong after 500,000km”

Richard Matthews, Mellor Sales Director, said:

“Since its launch in 2016, the Strata has delivered exactly as we envisioned. It’s a robust, nimble, and exceptionally economical bus, designed with long-term value in mind. Some Strata customers have reported their vehicles have clocked over 500,000 kms in operation and continue to perform very well — proof of the outstanding build quality and low total cost of ownership that our customers can rely on.”

One size doesn’t fit all – so they built three

The Strata range includes three models to suit different needs:

  • Strata – up to 22 passengers

  • Strata Plus – up to 26 passengers

  • Strata Ultra – up to 30 passengers

All three come in Class A or Class 1 layouts with a 2+2 seating configuration and can carry up to two wheelchairs in the extended low-floor zone. So, whether it’s a town shuttle or a rural lifeline, there’s a Strata for the job.

And let’s be honest – with social isolation still a major issue in rural communities, this isn’t just about buses. It’s about keeping people connected, ensuring services are reachable, and proving once again that small vehicles can deliver big impact.

Mellor’s next-generation Strata will be on show at this year’s ALBUM Conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre from the 12th to the 14th of May 2025. You’ll want to see this one in the metal.
