Greater Manchester Bus Services Back in the Hands of the People

Greater Manchester has taken a bold step in public transport, completing the historic re-regulation of its bus network. This milestone, the first in England in 40 years, represents a seismic shift in how the city-region connects its communities, promotes sustainability and drives economic growth. The transformation is part of the Bee Network, an ambitious vision for a fully integrated, “London-style” public transport system by 2025.

The £21 Million Bet That’s Paying Off for Transdev Blazefield

Transdev has bagged a major national accolade for its multi-million pound investment in electric buses and a brand-new green depot. The company scooped the Environment Award at the Routeone Awards, which have been celebrating the best in the UK bus industry since 2005.

At a glitzy ceremony in Birmingham, judges praised the Harrogate operator for its impressive efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Parent company Transdev Blazefield’s Managing Director, Henri Rohard, had this to say:

"I am delighted and very proud of our team – winning this award is a significant moment, especially at a time when the transition to electric buses is so important for our industry.

“This new generation of buses and charging systems has taken us three years to develop, following a successful application for £11 million through ZEBRA, the Government’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas fund. We are also very grateful for the support of our two exceptional partners, North Yorkshire Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, in securing joint funding for these exciting projects."

“We will continue to be proactive in reducing our carbon emissions, and by actively pursuing development and growth for our local communities. Everything we do in this direction makes a difference – for instance, 80 percent of the components in our new electric bus designs are produced in the UK or in Europe.”

The company isn’t stopping there. This week, it launched a brand-new £21 million fleet of fully electric double and single deck buses, alongside a fully electrified depot in Harrogate.

There’s more on the way too: a £7.5 million order for 15 electric single deckers is in the works, set to make the Shuttle route between Keighley and Bradford completely emission-free. And for its FLYER network, connecting Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate with Leeds Bradford Airport, a further £4 million has been invested in 15 hybrid single deckers. These nifty vehicles combine electric power and low-emission biodiesel, with regenerative braking tech to power the on-board electric motor.

Launched in 2020 in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds Bradford Airport, the FLYER service offers three routes linking major towns and cities to the airport, seven days a week.

Meanwhile in York, Transdev’s new green depot at Rawcliffe, opened earlier this year, is already smashing targets. It’s cutting carbon emissions by 28% compared to 2013 Government standards. Packed with renewable tech like solar panels and air source heat pumps, the depot is also doing its bit for local wildlife with bird and bat boxes dotted around the site.

Alexander Dennis

The public got a sneak peek of the company’s electric future back in June, when the first Alexander Dennis 400EV double decker for the flagship 36 route was unveiled at a family fun day in Harrogate. Alongside it was a Mercedes-Benz eCitaro demonstrator, giving everyone a glimpse of the 20 all-new electric single deckers now rolling out on Route 1 between Harrogate and Knaresborough.

It’s clear Transdev is driving headfirst into a greener, cleaner future – and it’s taking Yorkshire with it.
