Good news for festive travellers! National Express is boosting its network just in time for the Christmas rush, adding a whopping 16,000 seats a week across popular intercity routes from the 4th of December. This festive season, they’re offering more options than ever to travel between cities like London, Birmingham, Manchester and even to major airports like Heathrow.

The best part? They’re keeping the wheels turning throughout the festive season. National Express has over 340 journeys lined up just for Christmas Day, hitting nearly 95 destinations. So, whether you’re visiting family, heading to Christmas hotspots, or catching a flight, they’ve got you covered—even when rail services slow down from the 24th of December to the 2nd of January.
In the battle of the coaches, this move comes just after Megabus announced it’s cutting back services in England and Wales, leaving the likes of Flixbus and National Express to step up to the plate.
John Boughton, Commercial Director at National Express, shared his thoughts on keeping travellers connected during the season:
“Christmas is such an important time of year for travel and people deserve reliable, comfortable and affordable public transport over the festive period. As always, we’re here to help bring families together, and we’re encouraging customers to book in advance to get the best prices and guarantee a seat for travel - whether it be to visit the Christmas markets, watch a pantomime, or simply travelling home for Christmas.”
With demand for budget-friendly travel rising and competition thinning as some services cut back, National Express is all about stepping up. Ed Rickard, Network Director, highlights how they’re ready to meet that demand:
“We recognise the growing need for reliable, affordable and convenient public transport options. By increasing capacity and frequency on our key intercity and airport routes, we’re making it even easier for people to get to where they need to be. We’re expecting to see strong demand and have the flexibility to add more capacity when needed, especially as people start to make travel plans for the festive season.”
Last year, 19 million people chose National Express, and it’s clear why. Affordable fares start from just £4.90, and their coaches come packed with perks – think leather seats, free onboard Wi-Fi, USB charging, and a generous 20kg luggage allowance.
For those planning ahead, National Express has one message: book early to get the best deals, grab a guaranteed seat, and let them do the driving while you kick back and relax.
So, whether it’s Christmas markets, family gatherings, or festive nights out, National Express has your travel plans covered – just be sure to book ahead.
