Bus services across the Liverpool City Region are set for a major transformation, with plans for a fully publicly-run bus network moving forward at pace. The introduction of a franchised system will see services brought under public control for the first time in nearly 40 years, promising more frequent buses, better connections and improved infrastructure. Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Franchising is Coming Sooner Than Planned You’ve probably heard about the move to bus franchising—where routes, fares and timetables will be planned by the public sector rather than private companies—but here’s what’s happening next. The first phase kicks off in St Helens and Wirral, with the new system up and running by September 2026. The whole region should be fully franchised by the end of 2027, a year ahead of schedule. First Bus in Yorkshire Rolls Out Giant Poppies for Remembrance

If you’re spotting giant poppies on First buses around Yorkshire, it’s not your eyes playing tricks – it’s First Bus proudly showing its support for Remembrance this November. With 300 buses decked out in the iconic Royal British Legion poppy, First Bus North & West Yorkshire are adding welcome tribute to their fleet, honouring veterans and their families. And they’ve backed it up with a generous £3,350 donation to this year’s Poppy Appeal.

From Leeds to York, and everywhere in between, these poppy-clad buses are rolling reminders of the sacrifices made. But First Bus isn’t just showing off poppies – they’re putting their wheels in action by offering free travel for Armed Forces personnel, veterans and cadets heading to Remembrance events.

Whether you’re heading to a service on Sunday the 10th of November, or marking Armistice Day on Monday the 11th of November, just hop on and show your Armed Forces ID, medals, or uniform, and your fare’s covered.

In a respectful nod to tradition, First Bus drivers will even be permitted to pull over, if safe, at 11:00 am on both days to observe two minutes of silence.

John Roxburgh, Head of Operations at First Bus, commented,

“We have a number of colleagues who have served in the military or have friends and family connections so this is always a poignant time of the year.

“We hope free travel on our services will make it as easy as possible for as many veterans, serving personnel and cadets to attend Remembrance services and events in the region. The patience of customers in helping our drivers to pay their respects is much appreciated.”

So, as those poppy-adorned buses make their way through Yorkshire, remember that they carry more than passengers. They’re a moving tribute to those who have served, past and present, honouring the sacrifices made for all.
