Greater Manchester Bus Services Back in the Hands of the People

Greater Manchester has taken a bold step in public transport, completing the historic re-regulation of its bus network. This milestone, the first in England in 40 years, represents a seismic shift in how the city-region connects its communities, promotes sustainability and drives economic growth. The transformation is part of the Bee Network, an ambitious vision for a fully integrated, “London-style” public transport system by 2025.

Falcon Buses Orders 13 Alexander Dennis Enviro200EVs at Euro Bus Expo

Big news from Euro Bus Expo 2024! Falcon Buses has confirmed their order for the brand-new Alexander Dennis electric Enviro200EV single-deckers, making them the first independent operator to do so. These zero-emission buses are set to hit the roads in 2026, connecting key routes like Woking to Weybridge and Chertsey to Kingston. Talk about a clean, green revolution!

The move follows Falcon Buses’ successful bid for funding from the UK Government’s ZEBRA (Zero-Emission Regional Bus Areas) scheme, a big step toward transforming the UK’s bus fleet into a more sustainable, eco-friendly force.

What’s Under the Hood?

Let’s talk specs – because I know you’re curious. Each Enviro200EV will be 10.9m long, with space for 37 passengers. Not only will passengers have 31 fixed seats to choose from, but there are also six tip-up seats in two wheelchair bays, ensuring that those with reduced mobility or parents with pushchairs will have an easier ride.

The updated interior will bring some much-needed warmth and style, featuring lighter colours, sleek lines and a fresh finish. Expect a comfy, modern atmosphere on your next bus journey.

Under the bonnet? The new electric buses will be powered by the Voith Electrical Drive System, with a 400kWh battery to ensure long operational range between charges. Plus, thanks to their lightweight design and focus on energy efficiency, these buses are not only green but cost-effective for Falcon Buses too.

The Experts Weigh In

Mark Taylor, Regional Sales Manager at Alexander Dennis, shared some exciting thoughts:

“Our new Enviro200EV has been designed to replicate all the great features that have made the conventional Enviro200 Britain’s best-selling bus in an electric vehicle. It cuts out tailpipe emissions and improves energy efficiency.”

Falcon Buses’ Managing Director, Richard Telling, is equally excited about the upgrade:

“The Enviro200 has long been the mainstay of our services, with over 50 in operation and 15 examples added this year alone to give us a robust fleet that protects our bottom line. With this classic now upgraded for the next generation and updated with the latest zero-emission technology, and offering four seats more than other vehicles of this length, the Enviro200EV was an easy choice for us. We can’t wait to start this new chapter for our business in 2026.”

Looking Ahead

For Falcon Buses, this order isn’t just about upgrading the fleet – it’s about staying ahead of the curve in an industry where sustainability is becoming a top priority. By embracing zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles, they’re not only future-proofing their business but also doing their bit for the environment.

The future of bus travel in the UK is electric and Falcon Buses is leading the charge. We can’t wait to see the new Enviro200EVs rolling down the roads in 2026!
