Halloween is just around the corner, and up in the North East of England, Go North East's bus drivers have swapped their regular uniforms for something with a bit more… fright factor! In preparation for the spooky season, six brave bus drivers ventured to one of the area’s most haunted spots, Lumley Castle in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, for a bit of ghostly inspiration. Known for its spine-tingling tales of paranormal activity, Lumley Castle didn’t deter this fearless crew, who embraced their inner ghouls and went full-on haunted with eerie makeovers.

On the 31st of October, Go North East passengers can expect their bus journeys to come with a side of scares! Drivers will be decked out in their favourite costumes, making for a festive—and slightly frightening—commute. If you’re looking to spot these friendly phantoms, just hop on one of the six Halloween-themed buses rolling out across the North East. And for those who want a little guidance on where to find them, the Go North East app will be your Halloween HQ.
Lorraine Petch, a driver from the Deptford Depot, shared her excitement, saying,
“Wearing fancy dress is a great opportunity for us to join in the fun and put a smile on our passengers’ faces.”
And it’s not just the costumes! With Halloween landing during the school holidays, Go North East has extended its 'Kids Go Free' offer. From the 26th of October to the 3rd of November, families can head out for a fright-filled adventure, with up to three kids aged 11 and under travelling for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult. Imagine the haunted hangouts and spooky stops you can explore without breaking the bank!
Ben Maxfield, Business Director at Go North East, said,
“This spooky celebration aligns perfectly with our ‘Kids Go Free’ offer, which runs from 26 October to 3 November 2024, allowing up to three children aged 11 and under to travel for free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.”
So grab your little ghouls and goblins and hop on board for a Halloween adventure across the North East. Whether it’s a ghostly trip to Lumley Castle or simply a ride with a zombie bus driver, Go North East promises a spook-tacular journey you won’t forget!
