Westway Coaches Unveils the UK’s First Privately Operated Double-Decker Electric Bus

Remember when the idea of electric vehicles seemed like something out of a sci-fi film? Well, fast forward to today, and Pelican Bus & Coach has just delivered the UK's first privately operated double-decker electric bus. And not just any bus—this is the Yutong U11DD, the stylish heavyweight champion of eco-friendly transport, rolled out to none other than Westway Coaches of Surrey, a company that knows a thing or two about making a statement on the road.

The sleek bus comes fully decked out in Westway’s distinctive brown and gold colourway, proving that going green doesn’t mean compromising on style. With 72 leather-trimmed, seat-belted seats and a dedicated wheelchair space, this vehicle doesn’t just offer a smooth ride—it’s got luxury written all over it. And thanks to a powerful 422kWh battery tucked safely away by Yutong’s cutting-edge Electric Safety System (YESS), passengers can enjoy full air conditioning while cruising emission-free.

As Pelican's Managing Director, Richard Crump, puts it:

“I am absolutely delighted to be delivering this vehicle to Westway Coaches, they are a long-standing customer of Pelican’s and purchased the very first electric coach from us back in 2019. This delivery represents a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future and demonstrates our dedication to offering innovative electric vehicle solutions.”
